Friday catchup: 5 big tech things you might have missed this week

Big things happened. You may have missed them. Get your head around the main bits with this 30 second wrapup.

PC gamers taking deep breath, thinking peaceful thoughts

It has been a big week for Blizzard Entertainment, which dropped a pile of news about the impending beta for Diablo 3 and copped a lot of flack from the internets in the process. Not only will the game only be playable online (even the single player), it will have an auction system where players can buy in-game items for real cash. But Diablo 3 wasn’t the only reason Blizzard was on the radar this week, with World of Warcraft fans getting excited over the trademarking of the name ‘Mists of Pandaria’, which appears to be the name of the next expansion pack for the MMO juggernaught.

Not on the Internet tonight

We recently listened to an interview with a man claiming to be a member of Anonymous, in which he painted a picture of a group not bound by formal ties and organisation. With that in mind, we wonder whether efforts to arrest members of LulzSec and Anonymous will have any impact on the groups' activities - including the takedown of News International web sites. There have been a reported 21 arrests across several countries, including an 18 year old from Shetland who is currently banned from the internet and given a 10pm to 7am curfew.

Dr Dre has endorsed this Touchpad

And by that, we mean there's an HP TouchPad and Palm Pre phone used as props in this music video, while a comatose Dr Dre is monitored in a futuristic lab by doctors in white coats. The scene is made more ridiculous by the in-your-face use of the HP logo. Otherwise, who knows, people might think it's that other tablet. Welcome to the world of non-Apple tablets, so futuristic they appear in the future, so small that you can hide them behind a pencil and a small boy won’t notice them (see the video here). For all this, the US version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is barred from going on sale in Australia for the moment - while allegations of patent infringement are sorted out.

Apple iCloud

Free syncing services like Dropbox are very handy - just create an account, and have your folders and files replicated on the Web, your home PC, and at work. It beats juggling USB keys. Apple's iCloud promises to do all this seamlessly across your iPhone, Mac and iPad, and it will be an important part of the new OS for the next iPhone, which rumour has it will be announced any month now. A few of you raised some good points about all this here. For example, can we trust Apple with our data?

It's probably safe to sign up for that 12 month ADSL2+ plan

Unless you live in Coffs Harbour - then perhaps give that a second thought. Coffs Harbour is one of these nine locations next in line to be connected to the National Broadband Network, with work starting this month, and first services connected in a year's time. We're not so sure about assertions that wireless is any "better" or worse though. In fact, we glimpsed a wireless USB modem capable of 100Mbps (if a carrier eventually offers a service this fast). The plan is for some centers like Tamworth and Darwin to depend on wireless in the future, with the government planning to have up to 12Mbps speeds available by 2015. Oh, and just because there isn't a huge amount of people using the NBN just yet, don't think it won't be popular. As Communications Minister Stephen Conroy points out, it's not as though you'll have a lot of alternatives.
