Minecraft creator speaks out on Unlimited Detail claims

Notch, the nom de game of the phenomenally popular Minecraft, has a few things to say about Euclideon's 'unlimited detail'...

Our little article on Euclideon's 'unlimited detail' claims yesterday was bit of a popular one. In fact, we weren't the only ones to run something on the company, and overnight it was our most popular story, and no doubt the other articles got some exposure to.

And now the industry has had its say, and it's generally not positive.

John Carmack, of id fame, Tweeted that the tech has "no chance of a game on current gen systems", but perhaps the most damning comments came from Minecraft creator Notch. On his tumblr blog, he pretty much comes out swing with this simple statement:

"It's a scam."

And he makes a mess of fine points. For one, voxels, the underlying technology behind Euclidion's work, are nothing new, and there are many other good voxel engines. He also adds that the main reason to be sceptical is that the video we posted yesterday is a funding pitch, and since money is involved that it should be taken with a grain of salt.

He also expands on some of our own issues with the tech.

It's definitely worth a read, and we're currently trying to get in touch with Euclidion for comment. Of course... their site is currently down. Huh.
