Tablet battle: Apple kicks up stink over Samsung tablet

Tablet battle: Apple kicks up stink over Samsung tablet

The rise of iPad alternatives has hit a raw nerve with Apple, and Samsung's in the firing line.

For some users we speak to, one of the appealing things about Android tablets is that they're different to the iPad.

So news that Apple has prevented sales of an Android tablet because of an alleged patent infringement is interesting to say the least.

We were expecting to be at the media launch of Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 on August 11. However a court injunction means that the Samsung device can't be imported, advertised or sold in Australia for the time being. iTnews reports that is unlikely to change before August 29.

The case follows previous legal stoushes overseas, including a battle with HTC over the design of its smartphones.

Earlier this year Apple also named the Samsung Galaxy S II in an overseas lawsuit alleging patent infringement.

The Galaxy Tab 2

The iPad 2

Among the patents referred to by Apple is one involving the method for unlocking the device using the touchscreen.

Not sure what if anything the tech benefit of this argy-bargy might be after all the dust settles.

At this stage it sounds like situation normal - the bloody lawyers make sure they get richer, and everybody else has to put up with increased delays and costs, and reduced choice.

Apple didn't exactly invent the touchscreen, and what shape is a device supposed to be? Triangle? Of course they'll all look similar. Mac Computers look similar to plenty of competitors that have been around a lot longer than they have. Maybe Samsung needs to sue Apple for releasing a monitor in a rectangular shape. Maybe plenty of companies need to sue Apple for releasing a media device (Apple TV) that can connect to your PC to stream media content.

Or the Hadr drive, or RAM, or SCreens of any type.... AQ. This new Samsung looks like a better, more capable device than ipad. It's taken a while, and there's advantage in being seen (however selectively) to be first. And the Galaxy II trounces iphone - ouch for Big A. They'll recover and this leap-frogging benifits US in the long run.
Is the 'new monopolist' worried that Samsung has a better than the (maybe Aug29 release) ipad 2.5 will be? That's the advantage of being an actual maker. Samsung make good computer gear and superb screens.

While the Big A DID design a nice (but initially very limited) device and it is hugely popular, they invented NONE of the hardware used in tablet PCS (for over 15 years). None of it.

Hardware has become smaller, faster and cheaper without contribution from a NON-manufacturer who outsources so much of their production.

Even IBM did not make ALL parts in the first PCs (thought they did invent/develop a LOT of what we all stll use (HDDS and RAM for instance) and deserve respect as they pretty well created the mass-market computer industry.

Best (for the Big A) to keep real contenders out of the market, eh?
Crying "That's me-too product" when what the Big A really want is "Me only products".

If the closed, restrictive Big A infrastructure (better not say ecosystem or they'll sue ME) is to your liking, buy in to it by all means it works and is easy to obey.

If you prefer real freedom, buy something else. Like cars, computers, milkshakes it is your democratic right to have an alternative. No one should be allowed to trample on that right even if they can.

Sorry Photohounds 'real freedom'... sounding like a stuck record.

I haven't a clue whether Apple's patent claims will stack up in court and quite frankly neither do any of you who attack Apple. No doubt the courts or negotiation will sort that out.

Apple aren't trying to claim they invented the 'hardware' inside. I'm originally from the semi indistry - if you really wanted to go stupid, you could attribute everything in today's PC's, tablets, phones to half a dozen guys, from Fairchild Semi (remember them), Texas Instruments and IBM. Apple are from what I can see, claiming the concept, look and feel and the actual use of technolgy.

Apple has in fact in some instances driven technology. They drove Motorola and IBM to develop the Power PC beyond it's original spec, they have worked with Intel on Thunderbolt, the 'shaved' CPU was developed for Apple by Intel... They have also driven countless other manufacturers to bring technology to the market. The original concept may have been in many cases there, however Apple have been directly involved in the commercialisation.

To address your usual 'freedom' rant.

There are restrictions in Android that Google places on manufacturers, and in fact these seem to be growing with each new release.

The only real 'freedom' is the ability to re-invent the wheel by writing your own app, if you're one of the 1% who have the ability or desire to do so (not having a go at genuine Android developers here). Spend $00's of your own (or your employer's)time writing an app you could buy for a few dollars in an App Store and in the case of Apple know it has passed testing and is virus and trojan free.

There is more than sufficent 'freedom' to develop for iPad/iPhone, anyone can sign up - $US99 p/a gets you all the tools and pre-release Apple software, (I know you want them for free) the only issue is that Apple in their control freak policy insist that you if you want to sell, you must submit apps for checking to prevent the viruses and trojans seen on a number of occasions in the official Android store. HOW DARE THEY! You have total freedom to develop iPad/iPhone apps for internal use.

OK, they could loosen the controls a little at times, but hey - thousands of downtrodden developers have made a total of some BILLIONS of $$$ writing apps for this restricted control freak platform.

Millions of customers seem more than happy and business is adopting it, as are governments....

Seems the only people who have an irrational hatred of it are certain Android fanatics - step forward Photohounds (again, not having a go at the genuine Android developers, many of whom develop for both platforms).

As for your claim that the new Samsung looks better than iPad, not what most REPUTABLE testers are saying. Some even rank the HP above the Samsung, but both behind the Apple. Will be interesting actual users get their hands on the new Samsung. (if ever) We have been waiting to test it in house, just as we shall test the HP. We've decided against the Xoom on the basis of reputable tests worldwide.

Our company policy on tech purchases is to allow 'real freedom' with some minor annoying restrictions, such as nothing that presents a security issue and nothing that has potential reliability issues.

While we do have now 2 Android phones, users are banned from the app store without specific application approval from IT to avoid the security issues (and NO simply installing an anti-virus program on your phone does not protect you from Apps with a trojan hidden within the code - according to our IT Dept. So our Android users have damn -all 'freedom' other than the ability to use it with approved apps (starting to sound like Apple in our internal policies)

News Flash - info from the US today, Android platform has seen a 5-fold increase in malware since January - 'freedom' to give your private details to criminals! That's a 'freedom' worth fighting for!

Well who's a pretty little fan boy, amcmo?
Typical response from a fan boy when someone dares take a shot at Apple. At least their logo does represent them wonderfully - an apple with a bit out - in other words "Not All There!"
Suck it up amcmo and realize that Apple try to dominate by constantly suing everyone using the shotgun method. I don't hear you screaming too loud when Apple puts those "Developers" down by including "COPIES" of apps developed for iWhatevers. eg: Some of the features in Lion OS are ripoffs of apps in the AppleStore.

"when someone dares take a shot at Apple", well that rarely happens does it, and so rarely out of jealous spleen, heh?

Not that Apple Haters are ever bothered by their "facts" just being made up to suit.

Which Apps are you referring to MikeTheBike and do you know for a fact Apple hasn't licensed whatever they may have used, or hired the author, which they frequently do?

Mike,

For an Apple fan I allow a hell of a lot of non Apple product in house (including Android phones!)

If you'd bothered to read, you will have seen we intend to test the Samsung tablet (can you see that???), and if it meets our performance requirements (at first glance seems to easily do so), it will be approved for those staff who wish to use one.

I can't see many if any of my Android fanbois accusers ever allowing an Apple product to be selected on merit!

My consistent stance has been against the rabbid Android fanbois who attribute all evil to Apple and refuse to allow any dissent, while defending Google, who have been caught 'doing evil' more than anyone lately. But then they support(?) open source, so that makes it ok.

As Rubaiyat pointed out, one of the best new Apple features resulted from them seeing the worth of an App Store app and hiring the guy. Good way to get yourself noticed and the job you want. Not bad for such an evil company.

I don't think there's any Android tablet worth purchasing at this point. But it angers me greatly that the result of all this litigation is that the consumers miss out (lots of people want Android tablets, apparently).

I don't believe the consumer will miss out unless Samsung lose. I still believe an agreement will be reached before that stage, preferably sooner than later.

Perhaps slow things down a little as those who may be able to compete on performance have a second look over their designs to try to avoid any future litigation.

Samsung may well win in Oz and Germany and have the temporary bans lifted in the next few weeks.

I believe the new Galaxy is close enough to be considered seriously, and may turn out to score a few points on some aspects of iPad2.

We shall evaluate in-house if it's allowed on sale in Oz.

I hope the spat with Samsung gets quickly settled, either by the suit being thrown out of court or by some cross licensing agreement.

However it really would help if the large number of companies competing with Apple started investing in design as a serious and logical factor of their products and stopped taking the lazy way out of simply waiting to see which way Apple is going and then copying it.

Apple does not have a monopoly on ideas and some of the things it is doing (particularly in the UI) is wrong and should open up opportunities for the smart and nimble competitor.
