Watch the video: Car windows might become touchscreens

As if we need more proof that touchscreens are all the rage, designers are dreaming up ways to put them in cars. Watch the video.

For those wondering how far the touchscreen trend might go, take a look at the video below.

In the video, a child gazes wistfully out the window at a dreary countryside. Fields roll by, a lake, cyclists, trees that have lost their leaves. It's a peaceful scene: we imagine the child contemplating the simple joy of nature, possibly vowing to throw their Nintendo 3DS in the bin when they get home.

If you're anything like us, you're probably thinking "that's all well and good, but where do we check our email?" No problem:

Granted, having to stop the car so you can whip up a finger painting is hardly practical, but we imagine that's only the tip of the iceberg.

If you could use this system to view your email, or better yet, Google Maps, this might be a bit more handy. Games: sure. Videos: why not? Though we imagine some sort of window tinting would be needed for clarity.

This isn't the first concept video we've seen (Toyota was reportedly involved in the development of this prototype) that suggests we'll be using a lot of touchscreens someday.

If you think the Toyota designers are in love with the idea, it's nothing compared to what the people at Corning have in mind. They're imagining a fabulous future where touchscreens are literally all over the place. Here's the video:

Nifty!

One small niggle: all that extra non-essential glass in a car. Lacerations, anyone?

Interesting technology, although I think its application will apply more to a "headsup display" for the driver. Also, will someone please remind Toyota why all cars have seatbelts installed in them!

This sounds neat but I have a feeling these techno-frills are all designed to keep vehicles costing a small fortune while giving us no real engineering innovation.

But hey if you want a $400 a month car payment for something that looks "neat" then go right ahead and get excited.

And many will, d234 - "can your car do THIS?" - groan. Think of the repair bills - they'll 'see you coming'.

"oh that's the touch screen tosser model - the oil costs an extra hundred bucks for this model and it needs the xyz dominatrix handles replaced too :)

Will MS bring out a Windows for cars?
All we need is for Apple to get involved - then we'll be inundated with more Apple v non-Apple arguments (groan).

@Zipper, MS did bring out Windoze OS for cars, but they had to withdraw it. True to form, the cars kept getting the BSOD and crashing. . .
