New AirFoil release makes wireless streaming audio easier for Windows and Mac

Rogue Amoeba Software LLC has announced updates to its Airfoil application for Windows and Mac. Download a free trial here.

Airfoil allows users on Windows and Macs to wirelessly stream music to compatible devices on an Apple Airport Express network, including AirTunes-connected speakers and hi-fi systems, as well as iPhones, iPod touches, iPads and other computers running the complementary AirFoil Speakers software.

The updates – which are platform specific – include a redesigned user interface in Windows for greater ease of use, plus full support for third-party Airplay devices on Mac, and greater controls for those running the free AirFoil Speakers add-on to control playback of streaming media.

AirFoil for Windows 3.0’s most notable improvement is a redesigned user interface, which makes the program simpler to use. Version 3.0 also adds support for AirFoil Speakers users to initiate a connection, gain some remote control access to certain applications for playback purposes. The Windows application is now capable of sending track titles, artwork and other metadata to compatible devices, including Apple TV and AirFoil Speakers.

AirFoil for Mac 4.5 adds full support for third-party AirPlay devices, plus grants additional controls to AirFoil Speakers users, such as remote control playback in Spotify, Radium and Rdio. Version 4.5 also features numerous bug fixes, stability enhancements and is updated to be compatible with Mac OS X Lion, which is due for release this week if rumors are to be believed.

AirFoil for Windows 3.0 requires a PC running Windows XP, Vista or 7, while AirFoil for Mac 4.5 requires OS X 10.6 or later. Both programs are function-limited demos, allowing the user to listen for up to 10 minutes before the signal is distorted.

Registration, which costs US$25, removes this restriction. In addition to the main applications, free AirFoil Speakers companion software is available for Windows, Mac and Linux as well as iOS devices.
