Postbox 2.5 released, revamps user interface

Postbox Inc has released Postbox 2.5, a major update to its cross-platform email client for Windows and Mac users.

Version 2.5 features a redesigned user interface with new views, including an inline quick reply option, support for IMAP Yahoo! mail accounts and an improved user account setup wizard in OS X.

Postbox, which offers a low-cost alternative to expensive email clients such as Microsoft Outlook, is based on the open-source Mozilla messaging platform, and having pioneered features like the tabbed interface now making an appearance in Thunderbird, Postbox 2.5 introduces new features in an effort to keep it ahead of the game.

Postbox 2.5, which is available as a free upgrade to registered 2.0 users, concentrates very much on delivering improvements to the user interface, particularly with regards to the Mac version. There’s a brand new Vertical View, which allows messages to be viewed in a slim window to save on screen space. The message and conversation views have also been streamlined to reduce the number of interface elements cluttering up the screen.

Version 2.5 also introduces support for both monochromatic and color icons in OS X, the former being added in anticipation of OS X Lion’s release next month. Other OS X improvements include the option for using a Spotlight search to locate messages based on topic keywords, an improved user interface for the Add-ons Manager and setup wizards for RSS and newsgroups.

Other changes are detailed in the program’s release notes. Postbox 2.5 is available as a free 30-day trial for Windows and Mac OS X users. The full version costs $29.95.
