Local alert: Australian passwords found amongst LulzSec's 62,000 haul

Hacker collective LulzSec has leaked Australian email passwords to its followers, including government departments, universities and schools.

Earlier today, Lulz Security released a collection of 62,000 stolen email addresses and passwords to its followers. It has now been reported by the ABC that Australian passwords were among those stolen.

Leaked email passwords reportedly include AusAid, Victorian Government departments, local councils in Victoria and NSW, the University of New South Wales and high schools in Queensland and Melbourne.

It is currently unclear how many Australian websites and emails have been compromised, but the number of leaked passwords could be in the thousands.

The collection of login details was seemingly released as a reward for "flooding" an online forum yesterday. Lulz followers have already started posting screenshots of hacked Facebook, Amazon and other accounts that were accessed with the stolen passwords.

One user bought several books on Amazon using one of the accounts, while another accessed an online dating service, changing profile pictures to sexual content. Others claimed to have gained entry to online retailers and PayPal.

The LulzSec Twitter feed suggested the email collection had been downloaded thousands of times within the first few minutes.

LulzSecurity jumped into the headlines earlier in the month after hacking Sony Pictures, and has since targeted the US Senate and the CIA. Earlier this week, LulzSec leaked logins from a porn site, encouraging users to try the passwords on Facebook.

We'll keep you posted with more developments as they happen.

Yeah, it's legit. I've downloaded the text file and there are 1000's of Australian e-mail addresses. The biggest people at risk are users who use 1 password across all websites. I was pretty happy to find out my e-mail addresses are not on the list, and I feel very sorry for all users who's e-mails are!

Someday, Hackers(Not Government Supported) will be viewed as the Hero's of Civil Rights Reforms, Promoters of Socio/Economic Equality, Creators of Peace, Protectors of the poor & weak & misunderstood, and above all else they will protect us all from anyone who tries to undermine democracy.

Most of these hackers, have above average if not genius IQs. Most of them were misunderstood throughout their lives. The saddest part but what's true is as a society, we judge a book by it's cover, but fail to take the time to read the book. If you were to really understand these hackers, you would realize that as a society we have wronged them.

No matter how advanced of a security system you create, hackers will figure our a dozen other ways to get into these systems. Instead of trying to beat them, it's time we started to really listen and understand them. We need to start working with them, we can learn a lot from each other.

Yeah, of course malicious hackers are just great in the New World Order. When, and if, it arrives.

And so are graffiti "artists", right now.

Do your research, LulzSec are black-hat hackers, they stand for nothing but malicious damage at anyone's expense.

ONLYMEWORLD,

What a load of unmitigated rubbish!

These scum steal thousands of passwords, post them publicly and encourage others to try to abuse them - real defenders of freedom - NOT.

You/they can try to justify their actions all you like - nothing but lies.

There's probably lots of other Australians in that list. I recommend everyone goes to http://shouldichangemypassword.com/ to check if their email and username were published.
