According to the business newspaper Nikkei, Nintendo’s next console will arrive by the end of 2012 - and it may be set to revolutionise game controllers all over again.
If the paper is to be believed, the Wii 2 will use a six-inch tablet controller with a built-in camera and touchscreen functionality; an interface far removed from the current Wii console's motion-sensing remotes.
Apparently, the controller will also incorporate portable gaming; essentially turning the Wii 2 into two consoles in one. If true, this will see it competing against both traditional consoles and tablets such as the Apple iPad.
The paper reports that the innovative new controller is a direct response to the smartphone market, which has taken an increasingly large slice of gaming profits since the Wii launced in 2005. It is not clear whether this tablet controller will be the Wii 2's primary interface, or an optonal peripheral like the Wii uDraw Game Tablet (pictured above).
