Ubuntu targets 200 million users by 2015

Open-source operating system looks to expand reach beyond developers and capture "the world's hearts and minds".

Canonical has set a big challenge for Ubuntu: 200 million users by 2015.

Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of open-source support firm Canonical, made the prediction at an Ubuntu summit in Budapest, Hungary.

"[Our] goal is 200 million users of Ubuntu in four years," he said, according to a report on an Ubuntu blog.

"We’re not playing a game for developers' hearts and minds – we’re playing a game for the world's hearts and minds," he said. "And to do that we need to play by a new set of rules."

Last year, a Canonical employee estimated that Ubuntu had 12 million users globally.

Shuttleworth also accepted criticism over the Unity interface in the latest version of Ubuntu, called Natty Narwhal. "It’s perfectly normally for debate and questions around transitions like the one we made in Natty," he said.

Tried 3 times to install Ubuntu 11 alongside windows 7 64b ended up having to reformat entire drive, still could not install....gave up. Still too buggy to run other than on disk as far as I'm concerned.

Dual booting can be a bit daunting for first timers.

It pays to do your research first.

You might like to try running it in a virtual machine.

Ubuntu 11 is quite easy to set up. The only issue at present seems to be that the Unity desktop is a bit ragged and not to everyone's taste. That said, it's easy to change to Gnome or KDE.

Dual booting is not too much of a problem if approached methodically. There are any number of tutorials out there on it, I've just picked one off the net now.

I've run a quick eye over it and I don't think there's anything likely to trip up most PC users.

The guys at cnet are pretty good with their info, or there's a number of overseas PC mags that have how-to's online, some in great depth.

VM is certainly another way to go about it. You can get a couple of good VM programs for free. Virtualbox and VMWare. Personally prefer VMWare.

If you're using one O/S most of the time and just playing with the other to learn, a VM can be good as you're not likely to be too concerned about the slight performance hit running the second o/s under a VM. That said, we have run a couple of trials in house and consensus is that Win XP or Win7 running on Parallels on a Mac is less hassle than running natively at times. Linux on a VM under Win XP or 7 is very stable, from Ubuntu 10 onwards and Google Linux also not a problem.

Can't comment on any VM's under Vista as corporate policy here is that Vista never darkened our doorstep!

One of the divisions of the Group is a Microsoft Partner and I am aware they ran up a single Vista test machine then promptly had an exorcism and other mystic rites!
