Pensioners to get a set top box for free

Pensioners to get a set top box for free

Pensioners are set to receive a free set top box as Australia switches to digital TV.

Pensioners who are struggling financially will receive a free top box in a new $300 million scheme announced by the federal government.

Eligible recipients will also have the set top box installed in their homes and be given a demonstration on how the technology works.

$308.8 million will be allocated in the federal budget to the household assistance scheme, with more than two million households expected to benefit (around 37,000 set top boxes have already been rolled out in Queensland, South Australia and rural Victoria.)

Tenders are currently still being courted by the government, with Hills TechLife and Skybridge supplying the set top boxes in the earlier rollout.

In addition to pensioners, the scheme will also cover war veterans, special needs’ carers and people with disabilities who receive the maximum rate of government benefits.

By 2013, Australia will have finalised the switch to digital TV. Subsequently, all analogue TV sets will require a set top box to receive a signal.

The household assistance scheme was established to ensure all Australians are able to make the switch.

For more information about the switchover, visit the government's digital TV information page.

That's right, give them a set top box. With the price of power going up so quickly they won't be able to turn the tv on to make use of it.

Can think of a lot better ways to help pensioners.

What the hell, $300 million can be put to a lot better use for pensioners than a set top box, all the pensioners I know already own one anyway.

Give a TV HD ready instead of a stupid set top box bring the people up to date with the Technology.

There was talk a few years back of supplying a STB to every Aus household so the government could shut down the analog system and make a mint selling off the bandwidth to the highest bidder.

better late than never.

And Cyber? My mum lives for her soaps. :)

That's a good idea Pam.

Then we could add another zero to the bill.

Humm, on second thoughts, it could help with global warming to get rid of all the power hungry CRT TVs.

Assuming the government doesn't go to plasma.:d

One of our staff mentioned you could just about give every pensioner a no-name LCD digital TV for similar cost, reduce their power bill and global warming at the same time - no need for the Carbon Tax!

Talk about Indian givers - the govt hands out a $300 STB to pensioners while at the same time ensuring that their power bills rise by more than that every year.

Or give them nothing, then they can't use a TV at all! Epic power saving! :O

The outputs of the STB need to be rather special - most old TV's only take composite (the antenna cable or coax type) and the component (red, yellow, white rf plugs) type or maybe scart or mini-din. And the STB's that output to these types only support SD! So thanks to the Freeview cartel and their bosses the content mafia they will have spotty channel choices at best as most of the HD content has been siphoned into Foxtel. Even the ABC plays this game - now that a lot of expensive HD tv's have been sold, the HD content is being thrashed and churned and siphoned away. Much to the Packer/Murdoch clans delight. So an STB had better be able to output HD to old style tv's via composite (not HDMI) or poor old Cec will be pounding the remote as he wonders why he gets sound but no picture at confusingly random intervals...

Just adding a set top box does not necessarily give you a workable digital tv coverage.
As Slatts has advised - some tvs dont have av inputs. In which case you either have to add a special antennae attachment or wire the whole thing through a vcr. then you may need to upgrade the antennae and associated wiring. Now we are starting to talk serious money. in digital blackspots - ie outer country areas, you will need to add a satellite dish to pick up digital tv.
