Anonymous: we didn't steal Sony credit-card data

Hackers group denies involvement in Sony data breach, accuses the corporation of lying to public.

Anonymous has hit back at Sony over the accusation that the hacker group was partly to blame for the massive data breach on Sony's gaming networks.

In the wake of the attacks that saw up to 100m account details stolen, as well as potentially millions of credit-card details, Sony wrote a letter detailing its response to the breach to Congress.

In the letter, Sony claimed to have found traces of Anonymous's name and part of its “We are legion” motto on its network, and blamed the distraction of battling anonymous for its security failings.

Anonymous has hit back, moving to distance itself from the credit-card theft and criticising Sony for suggesting it was involved in the incident.

“Anonymous has never been known to engage in credit-card theft,” the group said in a statement. “Whoever did perform the credit-card hack did so contrary to the modus operandi and intentions of Anonymous. Public support is not gained by stealing credit-card info.”

Without naming Sony directly, the statement blamed “liars” for having dragged the hacking group's name through the mud.

“Many of our corporate and governmental adversaries have been known to have lied to the public about Anonymous and about their own activities,” the group said.

"There is no corporation in existence will choose the truth when lies are more convenient."
