Dick Smith is listing discounted prices for Apple iMacs listed on its web site - handy news if you've had your eye on a new Apple all-in-one desktop. The 3.06GHz Intel Core i3 iMac with a 21.5in display is advertised at $1304, while the 2.8GHz model with 27in display is priced at $2159 - compared with $2,399 for the 27in machine over at the official Apple web site. The discounts are not available online, with the site directing customers to check in store for availability. While it's a tempting offer, it comes amidst plenty of rumours that Apple is about to announce new iMacs. If this is true, we'd expect the new machines to get some of the features added to the new MacBook Pros recently - specifically, Intel's 2nd generation Core processors and the Thunderbolt connector for transferring data at high speed.
Last year Apple did major overhaul on the iMac, adding Core i3 and i5 chips (previous generation, not the new Sandy Bridge chips), and a 27in display. While we liked the display, there were certain things about the machine's design that annoyed us. Meanwhile, PC manufacturers continue to experiment with touchscreen and all-in-one designs - like the new HP Touchsmart 610-1030a, which has a special hinge allowing the display to slide.
