In recent years, certain computer viruses have returned to the methods of the past, with infections being spread manually from computer to computer. The only difference is that the viruses are now stored on USB thumb drives instead of floppy discs.
BitDefender has just released a free solution to this problem, dubbed USB Immunizer.
The BitDefender USB Immunizer is a free download that shields USB storage devices and SD cards against prominent malware infections, including Trojan.AutorunINF, Worm.Autorun.VHG and Trojan.Autorun.AET.
The software automatically blocks malware autorun.inf files, which means your storage device will remain safe, even if you plug it into an infected computer. If you regularly use public PCs or shared work laptops, this will deliver good peace of mind.
The tool also features an ‘Immunise Computer’ slider, which allows you to toggle your PC’s Autorun feature ‘On’ or ‘Off’ for external USB storage devices. Disabling the Autorun option will reduce the risk of your computer getting infected by an unsafe thumb drive.
“We have seen a significant increase in the past few years of malware exploiting the Autorun feature on USB devices to infect PCs,” said Catalin Cosoi, BitDefender’s head of online threats lab. “Our USB Immunizer is a simple yet effective solution to this growing issue. It will help users keep their removable storage devices and PCs safe from spreading threats.”
