Harvey Norman to open online store "within weeks"

One of Australia's biggest retail giants is finally moving into the online retail space, with its first online store set to launch within weeks.

Gerry Harvey, executive chairman of Harvey Norman, has announced plans to enter the online retail space, reports the Herald Sun. According to the retail giant, the online store will launch within the next few weeks.

Despite voicing concerns that the online venture would “cannibalise” profits from his brick-and-mortar stores, Harvey maintained that he had no choice in the matter.

“They're kicking us on the internet at the moment… I'm trying to get on at the right time," Harvey told the Herald Sun.

Currently, the Harvey Norman website merely lists retail goods available in stores, with no option to purchase items online. “By this time next year you'll see Harvey Norman with a pretty sizeable internet presence," Mr Harvey said.

The announcement will come as a surprise to many who have been following Harvey Norman in the news. Just last year, Harvey Norman's chief operating officer, John Slack-Smith, claimed that the company would look towards e-commerce in "five to ten years".

Speaking at the CeBIT expo in Sydney, Slack-Smith stated: "Today we have nothing from online activities. Over the next three years, we won't see a great deal of change in that regard either."

For years, Gerry Harvey has been a vocal opponent of online retail, particularly in the overseas space. In January, Harvey was involved in a campaign that sought to apply the GST to overseas online purchases.

Interestingly, the new store will allegedly ship goods from China, following the same online model recently announced by Myer.

I hope they don't mean crap like the online myer offering, which looked like a 2 year old had made it.

I thought they were running online stores for years ?? Any time you go to a HN store there are no staff to be found to help you !

I'll be waiting eagerly but my guess is I'll be very dissapointed. If they were up to it they would have had online for 5 years. So what they are doing is a patch up. Will their online store be competing against their fixed stores? You'd be pretty pissed if you ran one of his stores and have your prices undercut by your own boss. His problem is still that he is selling other peoples stuff unlike Kogan.

Officeworks has been succesfully running their online business alongside their retail stores for years. HN are just trying to play catchup and have got a long way to go to compete with the established players. They haven't done it well in the past (remember OFIS) and probably won't this time.

Retailers like Harvey norman have completely missed the point!
If you go to their store to buy a product, you have an expectation that you will get any information you need, not try to be sold an extended warrantee that you probably dont need and finally, you expect to be able to pay for your item and leave the store with your purchas in a short time.
So if you attend a harvey Norman christmas special, be prepared to grab your purchase and run for the 2 chekcouts available and then line up fior 1/2 to an hour just for the pleasure of buying your item at a cheap price.
if you dare to want to buy 2 items from seperate sections of the store,ie a toaster and a computer, then be prepared to line up twice to pay for your goods, as Harvey Norman stores split their electrical store in 2. You can only use the 2 cash registers allocated to the side of the store you wnat to buy the product from.
So in the end, it may be easier to buy online rather than from a physical store.
there is the real challenge Gerry!

We just use it as a drop off to getting a better deal elsewhere, our local HN is always busy especially Saturdays but if you happen to find something you want it doesn't take long to get through a check out because no one buys much there. They probably do the same as us and get a price check on their way to other store for a better deal. Everyone above has a bit of the other things I wanted to mention, like the online whatever it is that HN has on the internet, the successful Officeworks also having a successful online store, and especially the crap old Gerry has put on some online stores only to play catch up now. I had to put up with this with the Coles Myers group years ago, its good to see te old ways are still hard to give up for some. I've been doing online shopping since online banking has been around, that would be around the 90's if I remember correctly.

I don't see why I should not be able to order via Harvey Norman online & then go pick up at my local HN store.

My local PC shop has been doing this for about 20 years and its owners have made a fortune.
