Christmas gadgets: best smartphone accessories

What do you get the road warrior who has everything? A little something to take with them when they're travelling - or a little practicality with style

16GB LEXAR MICROSDHC PERFORMANCE KIT

PRICE $74.40

With a standard collection of apps, videos, phone camera shots and even a modest music selection, it has become surprisingly easy to tear through your phone’s memory, even with a 2GB Micro SD boost. With Lexar’s 16GB Micro SD kit, however, you’ll have memory to burn, especially handy for the current range of smartphones with 720p or higher video recording capability. The card ships with a handy USB reader for convenient transfer or sideloading of any media types. While 16GB might seem excessive for non-power users, the low price tag makes this a simple choice.

PLANTRONICS DISCOVERY 975

PRICE $178.95

Bluetooth headsets have never quite taken off in Australia. Something about them has been seen as pretentious, making it a tough sell for the manufacturers. Love them or loathe them, the Discovery 975 is one of the better on the market, mixing form and function into one stylish package. The device is extremely comfortable to wear, features Plantronics’ proprietary sound processing technology and dual noise-cancelling mics for clear calls and can pair to two separate devices – perfect for the growing hordes with different work and personal phones. The black leather carrying case doubles as a charger and can carry an additional two full charges for the 975 even when not plugged in.

NETCOMM MYZONE

PRICE: $149

Between smartphones, tablets and the increasing horde of handheld gaming machines, eBook readers and other devices with Wi-Fi connectivity, it can be difficult to juggle net connections and 3G accounts. NetComm’s MyZone Wi-Fi router circumvents the hassle, letting you run all devices from a single 3G SIM. The MyZone weighs in at 77g, light enough that you barely notice you’re carrying it. You’ll get between 4 and 6 hours of battery life from a single charge and it works across all Australian mobile networks (although notably, only on Vodafone and Optus’ 2100MHz, not their 900MHz network). It’s this carrier agnosticism that makes the MyZone well worth the price tag. NOTE: NetComm contacted us recently and have dropped the price from $299 to a very reasonable $149!
