Apple could be on brink of releasing iOS4 update

Apple is planning to issue an update for its iOS4 software, according to widespread reports..

Aside from struggling to keep up with the overwhelming demand for the iPhone 4, Apple has had to issue advice to users overseas on how to improve the device's reception, and fend off a string of complaints about bugs.

An Apple posting on its tech support forum confirmed an OS 4.0.1 software fix addressing the issues with the operating system would be out sometime this week, possibly as early as today, according to Apple Insider. However, any mention of this appears to have now been taken down from the Apple forum.

MacRumours has gone further by posting a screenshot of an email which is claimed to be from chief executive Steve Job stating: “There is no reception issue. Stay tuned.”

We contacted Apple to ask whether an 4.01 update for iOS4 was imminent and also asked confirmation as to whether the signal strength problem was hardware or software related.

Apple had not responded at the time of publication, however it is unlikely that Apple officials would use a support forum to release highly sensitive information such as this.

The company previously tried to play down the signal problems, with Steve Jobs suggesting to one user that he should grip the phone in a different way to avoid reception issues.

The official advice from Apple is to buy one of the 'bumpers', which clip over the stainless steel band and help to resolve the reception issues.

If the reception issues cannot be resolved with the imminent software update Apple should at least give a free bumper for each iPhone purchase.

Nintendo did the same to try to solve the security issues with the WII remote control. It home delivered a free bumper and strap for each WII remote to every customer who requested one.

The way I heard it, the stainless steel band in question is part of the antenna for the phone.

The bumper is meant to insulate it from coming in contact with the users skin, causing the antenna to earth out through the user.

If that's the case, a software patch won't do much.

A reception issue, because the user can touch the aerial, in 2010? Needing an OS upgrade? Easy to see MS has shares in this company.

The HTC desire and Sony X-10 are looking better by the day. I'll use my 'old' phone while it is still OK thanks. I see most of the extra as gimmicks anyway. It does look nice, though.

hmm, I got my iPhone on launch day, the signal seemed a bit temperamental on the first day, but has been perfect since the carrier settings were updated.
This issue regarding the signal being blocked hasn't effected me. I have held it in the way which is supposed to drop the signal several times and only notice the signal drop once.
