Computex 2010: Intel reveals new Atom chips

Intel has announced Oak Trail processors for tablets and Canoe Lake for ultra-thin netbooks.

Intel has disclosed plans for its Atom processors, including models optimised for tablet devices, an updated platform for thinner netbooks and availability of the latest Atom chips with support for DDR3 memory.

The firm used the Computex show in Taiwan to unveil the Oak Trail codename for upcoming Atom chips optimised for tablets and sleeker netbook form factors.

The processors are due to be available in early 2011 with a 50 per cent reduction in average power consumption over existing chips, according to the firm.

Intel also demonstrated Canoe Lake, described as an innovation platform intended to deliver netbooks half as thick as existing models. Intel would say only that netbooks based on the technology will come to market "over time".

Dadi Perlmutter, executive vice president at Intel, demonstrated a prototype netbook measuring just 14mm thick, and said that the platform will accommodate single-core and dual-core Pine Trail Atom chips.

"Intel believes the strength of the Atom franchise can help consumers realise the true potential for a common experience to enable the compute continuum," said Perlmutter.

Intel also announced immediate availability of the Atom N455 and N475 processors for netbooks, both of which support DDR3 memory and run at 1.66GHz and 1.83GHz respectively.

Two Atom chips for desktop systems, the dual-core D525 and single-core D425, are also set to be available in systems from 21 June, according to Intel.
