Google said to be eyeing TV service

by Shaun Nichols  on Mar 10, 2010

Google is reportedly trialing a new service which would include its search engine on set-top television boxes..

According to the Wall Street Journal, the company is developing a service in connection with satellite provider Dish Network to offer Google Search features for television programming and streaming internet video services.

The new boxes would reportedly run a version of the Android operating system and could be integrated with Google's advertising operations.

News of Google's possible venture comes as many television vendors are advertising sets that tout internet connectivity and support for streaming video services among their feature sets.

The reported service would not be the first venture Google has made into the television space. The company launched a TV ad sales service in 2007 which allows advertisers to bid for and purchase TV advertising spots over the web.
