Canon's EOS 550D takes on HD movies and extra stills power to put itself centre frame

[Clarification: Canon has contacted us to point out that the 550D is not replacing the 500D.]

Canon has been quietly upping its consumer DSLR game for a while now, but its latest shot at glory won’t go unnoticed.

Announced today, the 18MP EOS 550D boasts near pro-level specs without taking out a second mortgage on the studio.

And the EOS 500’s successor blurs more boundaries than that – it thinks it’s an HD camcorder, too.

Alongside impressive stills skills, including Canon’s DIGIC-4 image processor (that can handle up to ISO 6400 for definition in low light) and 3.7fps continuous shooting, the 550D boasts Full HD video capture and HDMI connectivity.

It also has a 3.5mm stereo mic socket for laying down quality soundtracks and a 3in LCD with glare reduction and a wide viewing angle.

The camera will be available from February 24 – good news for hobbyists looking to take the next step towards pro spec, but who can’t justify forking out for an EOS 7D. We'll bring you information on Australian pricing as soon as it comes to hand.

Plus it could spell a lower price for the EOS 500D. We’ll be waiting outside the shop if it does.
