Watch out Intel, AMD gets budget processor boost

AMD have released three new processors under $159, going up against Intel's pricier offerings - including the Phenom II X2 555 series

AMD are at their budget best again, slashing prices and taking names in an industry mostly dominated by one big player: Intel.

AMD have released three new processors (for Australia) in all, optimised to work with next-gen graphics cards and entertainment rigs, including the latest release of ATI's Radeon 5800.

Better HD playback, DirectX 11 gaming support and designed to support the multi tasking environment of Windows 7, the revamped Phenom and Athlon processor family takes a budget focused response to Intel's reinvigoration of their Core i5 and 32 nanometer processors.

Beyond having a lower price point, AMDs low prices are likely to appeal to system builders, budding digital video editors and gamers.

Pricing and release information for the CPUs are:

  •  AMD Athlon II X2 255     -       $99
  • AMD AthlonTM II X4 635 -       $159
  • AMD PhenomTM II X2 555 -   $129
