5 must-have gadgets for 2010

From Canon's incredible EOS 7D, to a new rival to TiVo - these five must-have gadgets are sure to capture the excitement of hardware geeks for 2010

Canon EOS 7D

This product actually appeared in 2009, but for anyone looking for a truly impressive DSLR that's even remotely
affordable (something we can't say about Canon's 1D Mark IV), the EOS 7D will be as desirable as ever.

T-Box

If you're a Telstra customer on a speedy cable broadband connection, we strongly advise you keep an eye out for the T-Box, a PVR with 200GB storage, dual HD tuners, wireless, and unmetered BigPond channel content. In trial stages for BigPond Cable customers in Melbourne at time of writing, but keep your eyes peeled for wider availability.

Motorola Droid

The Google Android phone has been a hit and miss affair. We thought the HTC Dream had room for improvement (the interface was impressive, but we weren't so happy with the keyboard and camera), and while the HTC Magic was a slimmer device with better battery life, those wanting a physical keyboard were left in the lurch.

Now it's the Motorola Droid that's on our most wanted list. With straight lines and a super-slim appearance, the Droid design is completely at odds with the iPhone aesthetic.

Not only that, but Motorola has somehow managed to squeeze in a 3.7in touchscreen, a physical keyboard and a 5MP camera.

Edimax 3G-6210N

We've seen wireless routers that let you share a 3G broadband connection before, but this one's different - Edimax claims it's the world's first wireless 3G router that runs on batteries.

Powermat

We can't say we're overwhelmed by the battery life of many new smartphones. Having to constantly charging your phone is a pain, but it will potentially be made easier by new chargers coming in 2010. The big deal is wireless charging, from the likes of Powermat, which make a small "pad" or surface that you drop your phone on to charge. There's no fiddling with plugs and adaptors, though there are a few catches in the first version - for example, you'll need to put your phone in a special Powermat case. We also spotted new universal charging docks such as those from Idapt - these aim to take the pain out of having lots of separate chargers by letting you charge multiple types of phones (though you need to switch adaptors).
