Microsoft kills COFEE download

Legal beagles from software bully Microsoft have managed to close down the last public download source for the Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor (COFEE).

Microsoft COFEE is a natty toolkit that the Vole designed for assisting coppers with their inquiries.

However the code was spilled by Internet burglars and finally ended up on Cryptome.org.

Cryptome is a website that is famous for privacy activism and exposing various hacking, intelligence and secrecy related information.

The Vole sent a Demand for Immediate Take-Down to Network Solutions, which hosts the site. Faced with the prospect of having its whole operation shut down for the sake of a single file, the site owner, John Young, removed the download link on November 20 and sent Network Solutions a notice of compliance.

According to SFGate, thousands of copies have already been downloaded, so Microsoft's COFEE software is pretty much public now.

We're amused at the thought of the Vole having to play whack-a-mole trying to stamp it out.

In case anyone is wondering, Cofee uses standard MS tools (sysinternals etc) to scan a 'suspects' computer and stores the results in an xml file.
It's thorough but there's nothing new here.
