The best apps for the frequent flyer, road traveller, student, or anyone who wants to make their iPhone their constant timekeeping companion

The iPhone can tell time, give you world time zones, act as a simple stopwatch and work as an alarm clock. Why would you want or need any other clock application?

For a start, because while the iPhone manages those tasks, it does it in a relatively ungainly and unattractive way, which is an oddity for something coming out of Apple. There's also a usability argument depending on the type of clock you want the iPhone to be.

Nightstand

A relaxing overnight glowing clock.
Nightstand: A relaxing overnight glowing clock.

If you're in the habit of leaving your iPhone by your bedside so you can check it overnight, NightStand ($1.19) gives you a classic glowing clock in portrait or landscape modes. The similar NightTimePlus  (Free) performs the same task in a slightly different visual style.

Sunlight Clock Free

Sunclock: Light where there's light, dark where there isn't. Could it be any simpler?

The world clock on the iPhone will tell you the time, but what it won't tell you is if the person you're calling on the other side of the planet is likely to be in pitch darkness. This is where Sunlight Clock Free could come in handy. It won't tell you the time per se, but will show you where the sun's shining over the planet at the current time, so you're less likely to mis-read your clock and wake somebody up.

MagicHour

MagicHour: Tell the time and light your portraits perfectly.

If you're really keen not only on knowing the time where you are, but pretty much everywhere along with every kind of sunlight information, try MagicHour ($4.99), a clock application with particular application for photographers looking for perfect illumination.

DeskClock

DeskClock: If DeskClock's calendar tied into your actual appointment calendar, it'd be near perfect.

If you want the time presented in a more professional looking fashion, DeskClock (Free) gives you the choice between 12 and 24 hour clock above a standard looking desk calendar.

Binary Clocks
Want to show off your geek credentials? Why not install a Binary clock application? Well, we could say that you might not want to if you wish to be able to easily tell the time, but people's tastes differ. There's a range of available free and paid binary clock Apps for the iphone, from Binary Clock  (Free) to Binary Clock (Free) , to A Binary Clock (Free) to BinaryClock  to Binäruhr Free Binary Clock (Free). They all do the same thing - give a binary representation of the current time, so you can show off exactly how geeky you really are.

A Binary Clock: The current time is... no, we've got no idea.

Binaruhr: At the 0101011 stroke, the time will be.. no, we still can't work it out.

BinaryClock: Even binary in cartoon form is deliberately obtuse.
Binary clock or low resolution Tetris? We still can't quite decide."

Binary Clock Free: Hang on. Shouldn't there only be 1 or 0 binary clocks available?
