Internode introduces wireless antenna: can you boost your wireless signal on the cheap?

For $29.95 Internode now offer customers the chance to boost their 3G reception. The product can be used with any wireless ISP, though how effective they are is still to be seen

Australian ISP Internode are offering 3G range boosters, supplied by UK manufacturer Panorama antennas, which promise a considerable signal boost for the average broadband user.

The 3G TCLIP is the kind of range booster you might have seen offered for your mobile phone years ago, when it was popular to use big clunky aerials.  The universal clip attaches to laptops, and improves the signal by scanning for better frequencies.

In addition to a range of broadband price cuts announced by Internode in the last few days, the company is eagerly backing the new hardware edition as a way of comforting the legions of 3G users who often fail to achieve optimum 3G performance - handy, if you don't happen to be using the rather expensive Telstra Bigpond service.

The 3G antenna is available from Internode

At $29.95, it might be worth taking a punt on if your 3G signal needs a helping hand. The antennae work on the 824-960 and 1710-2170 MHz range and can be docked or attached to the computer.

The antenna is intended to enhance signal reception for customers who reguarly use Internode's main NodeMobile 3G data plans in areas where low signal strength is a common problem.

It would be nice to imagine that these kind of hardware additions are the magic bullet to countering lousy 3G reception, but until we see some hard data on the benefits these boosters can provide, we're going to withhold judgement for now.

The products are on sale now through Internode's website.

I have one of these... not from Internode... exactly the same model of antenna. I am on the 3 network. It works fairly well for the cost. Gets the signal up and away from your computer fans etc and higher up. Only good if your USB modem supports external antennas. Many do not.

Would like some feedback on this product, as i know of a few people stuck on pair gain phone lines that are forced to use 3G and get lousy speeds from that. One of which was unable to get any 3G other than Tel$tra's NextG service.

I'm very happy with my Internode wireless antennae purchase, I'm on the exetel plan (Huawei E169)which uses the optus 3G network, I've found my signal which used to drop back and forth between WCDMA and HSDPA and was consistently below 50% now is holding a constant 98% HSDPA, for $30 bucks you can't go wrong.
Also it arrived the next day after I placed the order, so very happy with Internode's service.

After experiencing poor download speeds with my E220 (on 3)I discovered a company which specialises in antennas. The E220 doesn't have a port for an external antenna so I think I have to change the modem. Anyway, people might want to check www.comnet.com.au
