Linux bosses have hinted that there will be a new netbook based on the Linux Moblin OS announced this week at the Intel Developer Forum

Linux bosses are saying the announcement will be the first step in their plans to reassert the initial dominance Linux had on the netbook market. Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation said: "You're going to see this week interesting new netbooks coming out that are killer. They have the cool factor and they're priced right”. This is where Linux thinks it will have the edge over Microsoft going forward. With more and more free laptops being given away on contract, and the introduction of Windows 7, Linux believes there is a gap in the market that needs to be filled. “Only free software like Linux can support that model”, continued Zemlin. "Microsoft's economics don't fit into that at all. "Microsoft went in and gave away XP for free to shore up market share in an emerging space that's fast growing. But they can't sustain that forever, they can't do it with Windows 7," he said. Aiming at the most affordable end of the market, Zemlin concluded that Linux would work on creating something new rather than trying to mimic Microsoft, and concentrate on finding "what it does really well at what price for which people”. This is reportedly the model the new Moblin netbook will follow, and will be aimed at young people on the go, or those looking for a simpler second computer for basic tasks. Asus and Dell have both shown interest in Moblin previously, so the planned announcement for this week could well be from one of these companies. As always we'll be keeping you updated.
