Symantec rolls out Norton 2010

by Shaun Nichols  on Sep 10, 2009
"NIS 2009 works for me on Win 7 RC. It trashed my wife's XP PC, but installed OK on Win 7. If 2010 version doesn't work on Win 7, even if it hasn't been released yet, then it is pretty pointless. ..."

The company said that the new Norton 2010 release would focus on reputation-based malware detection, which spots malicious applications based on behaviour rather than code signature..

To boost Norton's reputational detection, Symantec has developed a new component known as Quorum.

The tool is said by Symantec to weed out malware by analyzing an application for such attributes as age, source and behaviour. The factors are then analyzed and used to build a 'reputation' attribute which then allows Norton to track and isolate malicious software.

Quorum will also utilize a cloud-based network to track malware and allow systems to share malware data and deploy protections at a faster rate.

With the new tool, Symantec hopes to help progress beyond a signature-based model which vendors are increasingly shying away from due to a rising tide of new malware samples which makes constant signature updates nearly impossible.

Symantec is also among the vendors looking to improve by security software and overall system performance by lowering install size and memory footprint. The company said that the new software installs in roughly one minute and utilizes 10MB of system memory when operational.

Pricing information (supplied by Symantec): The suggested retail price for Norton Internet Security 2010 is $99.95 for a three PC license, which includes a one-year service subscription to use the product and receive Symantec’s protection updates. The suggested retail price of Norton AntiVirus 2010 is $59.95 which includes a one-year service subscription to use the product and receive Symantec’s protection updates.

Thanks for nothing Symantec, the timing of this release sucks! I have been using Norton for so many years that I only had a 1 PC license (or so they told me).
So only on Wednesday I went to Officeworks and bought the 2009 release, because 2010 wasn't due for another month, and because I needed a 3 license package and wanted up-to-date CDs for installation. I couldn't wait any longer because my subscription expires on Sep 12th.
So, all up I wasted my money because I also installed it onto my laptop which is running Windows 7 RC1 and lo and behold, it has an incompatibility. Of course, it was for that machine that I needed another license. I hope they have the 2010 version fixed for Windows 7, becasue I would advise everyone to stay away from it until they KNOW it is fixed.
Lastly, Norton loves to promote it Save & Restore program to people, be wary of this as well. I run my email off a U3 Sandisk Flash Drive on a Contour Cruzer with encryption. Save & Restore breaks the U3 software so badly that it refuses to load the device, you cannot enter your password; and hence are shut out from all your files, U3 programs and their data.
Too bad, Symantec makes the path to support on their web site so difficult to find. I could have a field day putting all these problems into it, if only I could find it.

So you're angry that a piece of software isn't designed for an OS that hasn't been released yet?

That makes sense.

Actually NIS 2009 runs fine with Windows 7 RTM. If you are a Microsoft Partner and subscribe to the Microsoft Action Pack, you can download your license keys and Win 7 Business (10 User) and Win 7 Ultimate (1 User) 32 an/or 64bit as of Aug 16 - Full RTM. I upgraded a Vista 64 Machine to Win7 64bit That had NIS 2009 on it and it didn't miss a beat...........Also should be able to download NIS 2010 soon and install it on under your 2009 Subscription - my 2009 is actaully a spare copy of NIS 2008 that I had left in stock.

I hope this helps you totaus.

That's odd. I am running NIS2009 on 3 computers. One running Windows 7 RTM and 2 running Win 7 RC1...

NIS 2009 works for me on Win 7 RC. It trashed my wife's XP PC, but installed OK on Win 7. If 2010 version doesn't work on Win 7, even if it hasn't been released yet, then it is pretty pointless. Personally I won't waste my money on Norton NIS again in the near future, too many things it doesn't do well or breaks imo.
