Don't throw out your old Blu-ray players just yet! You'll still be able to play 2D content from 3D Blu-ray discs

The Blu-ray Disc Association is working on a set of specifications for building 3D-enabled Blu-ray players. The plans include 1080p per eye (as we've seen from Sony and Panasonic's systems).

The Blu-ray Disc Association is also looking to ensure that 3D players will play 2D content and allow you to watch 3D discs in 2D if you need to, say if you suddenly lose an eye. But it will be possible for content providers to require 3D-only playback.

Guidelines and specifications will be published in December 2009 so, it's probable that 3D Blu-ray players will be with us in the first half of 2010.

See our story on Sony's plans for 3D TV by 2010...

Prediction: 3D TV will never get off the ground.

Who wants to sit around wearing stupid glasses just to watch TV?

There is an old saying that when you assume, you make an ass out of you and me.
I would not assume that this 3-D technology will require glasses until I see evidence. In this case, I have seen no evidence yet that 3D Blu-Ray will require glasses.
Other PCA articles on 3D TV & Blu-Ray point to a number of standards including at least one that does not require glasses, that is lenticular lenses.
Yours is the first anti 3D TV comment I have ever seen, so I think it will be more popular than you think, BUT I also expect (not predict) it will probably also be slower to arrive and be taken up than the suppliers expect because many people still haven't yet moved to 2D HD TV.
