We've been waiting for Apple's Mac Tablet but Toshiba has got there first with a multimedia touchscreen treat

While we're waiting for the Apple Mac Tablet, Toshiba has revealed its own tempting tablet, announced overseas. It's a touch screen slab built to allow you to quickly access the web from your sofa or bed. For those of you who admitted you tweet before you eat, it could be perfect.

The Toshiba JournE Touch has a 17in screen, is 14mm thick and weighs around 400g. It has WiFi (obviously) and will come in several colours to match your Laura Ashley curtains. It's got a brushed aluminum body and  LED backlighting.

Toshiba says the JournE Touch will be instant-on and connect via HDMI to your TV to allow you to watch HD films in another room. It'll also grab music and photos from your hard drive. It will have some form of app store and use Toshiba's Media Controller software but what the apps will be like remains to be seen.

Toshiba says the JournE Touch beats using a smartphone because they have keyboards. But then there's the iPhone which already does many of the things the JournE Touch can and has a huge app store to draw on.

The JournE Touch tablet is rocking Windows CE, which seems a little old fashioned in these Android happy days, and uses an ARM processor.

The Toshiba JournE Touch is the first of a range of new multimedia connected tablet devices from Toshiba so it looks like the war from the living room just got a lot busier.  The Toshiba JournE Touch will set you back around €250. We're still reeling at Toshiba's bravery at using "touch" in the device name!

Let us know what you think in the comments: have Toshiba been a touch rash or are you touched by what a great idea they've had?

I've always wanted a REAl computer based on Windows CE, this looks promising, but had figured more on a clamshell laptop form factor with a keyboard. But the combination of a 17 inch screen and 400g weight, just does not sound right. That's too big a creen for the weight, 7 inches sounds more realistic: is there an error in the article?
