We've tested a massive 25 netbooks to provide a list of the best and worst mini laptops, with one surprise winner. Also, see our big TV set top box guide, in the new issue of PC Authority

In the October issue of PC Authority, on sale now at your local newsstand:

Massive Netbook Megatest

There is a vicious battle going on in the world of laptops. On one side sit the budget machines, on the other the burgeoning tribe of netbooks. In this group test we try a massive 25 ultraportables and provide you with our verdicts.

Your Ultimate Home Entertainment Box

Looking for the one set top box that can do let you watch and record digital TV, access online movies, download shows, and stream video? Instead of sitting in front of a computer to watch movies on the web, what if you could bring the Web into your lounge room, along with digital TV and your DVD collection? You could sit back, put your feet up, and control everything with a remote. Sound like a dream? We've gone in search of the ultimate box that can do it all.

64-bit Windows - should you switch?

One of the biggest questions we get asked at PC Authority is "should I switch to 64-bit?" 64-bit editions of Windows have been available for several years now, and most new processors are capable of running them, but the majority of us are still running a 32-bit OS. With Windows 7 about to launch, we ask if the time is right to switch.

AMD Motherboards

For power on a budget, AMD's Phenom II processors can't be beaten. An AM3-based Phenom II processor will work in either an existing DDR2-based AM2 motherboard or a newer DDR3 model, giving you a number of options when it comes to building a system. We've tested four boards to partner one with.

As it happens, I bought a netbook for my wife two days before the mag arrived with this article. My thoughts:

The four Samsungs come out very well, and you remark that the Labs Winner, the Samsung N110 "beats rival Asus 1005HA for sheer value for money." The Asus is listed as $825 - is this an error? - and the N110 at $669, at which it's clearly better value. In practice, the N110 is available for $649 from Online Computers, either with an extra Gb RAM and free delivery or with a slim DVD-writer. The 1005HA is available from $599, much more competitive than the price given in APC but probably behind the OC deals in value.

My wife wanted a small 8.9-inch netbook. Orange IT in Sydney have the Asus EeePC 900HA for $420, a terrific price for a good model (runout stock), and sufficently smaller than the later 904HA ($499 from our local suppliers in Brisbane) to be preferred by my wife.

Of the cheaper models, the Lenovo IdeaPad S10e ($488 in Bris) seems to be one of the best buys; it may be aimed at the education market but is functional and low-cost.

Well, I was about to buy a netbook. Received your magazine via subscription. And after reading your great 25 Model review, I changed my mind on the brand I was going to buy. I have now ordered a Samsung N110 with 2GB of ram. Fantastic Review.
