Sony 3D TV to go into mass production next year – brace yourselves for an extra dimension to home theatre

Sony kicked off the massive European tech showcase that is IFA with news that it will put 3D TVs into mass production next year.

In documents leaked ahead of the Sony keynote happening in Berlin this evening Sir Howard Stringer is reported to be announcing plans to make Sony's Blu-ray players, PS3 console and Vaio laptops compatible with 3D technology, as well as producing a whole new range of 3D flatscreen TVs.

A memorable line from tonight's speech will see the chief exec of Sony proclaim: "The the 3D train is on the track and we at Sony are ready to drive it home.”

Sony's tech uses "active shutter" technology for its 3D glasses (which use a flickering method), as opposed to "polarisation" (normally red and blue) glasses. Sony claims that this makes 3D more effective from a wide range of viewing positions, instead of having to place yourself straight in front of a screen.

Confused? Brush up on The 5 Things You Need to Know About 3D Technology...
