Western Digital scores world's biggest 2.5 inch terabyte drive

"would the bios of the laptop even support 1TB? but 1TB of laptop storage is a little overboard it could end up being the worlds first 1TB USB Harddrive no doubt"

What's sure to become a must-have in portable drives, the Western Digital 1TB Blue Scorpio drive has just become our next most wanted piece of computer hardware.

It's a good week to be in storage. Today, Western Digital have announced their intentions to release a massive 1 terabyte drive in the ultra-portable 2.5" drive format.  The drive will form part of the 'Scorpio Blue' range.

This marks a world first for the company, in a move that's bound to have computer geeks glowing with stroage envy.  The drive is said to be compatible with the 'My Passport Essential SE Portable USB drive' products.

To put this all in perspective, we did a search on Static Ice this morning for similar drives. Currently, you can get a Western digital 3.5" SATAII 1TB drive for as low as $99.99 online from Mwave. In the more portable 2.5" format, you can get a WD 500GB drive for $188.00 from Apus.

Though, with storage prices continuing to fall every few months, the price for the 2.5" drives will likely drop much sooner, rather than later.

A Western Digital spokesman has told us that prices and release dates are yet to be confirmed for Australia.

For now, we're dreaming of a souped up 1TB netbook. Now, that would be something to gloat about.  Our most wanted storage item can't come soon enough.

Funny timing this, I was just looking at upgrading from an 80GB drive to either a 500GB WD Scorpio Blue, or a 320GB Scorpio Black. The Black was winning based on slightly higher speed, better availability and lower cost.
The idea of my two year old notebook having 4 times the storage of my year old desktop is a little overwhelming. So what's the consensus out there: stick with the 320GB Black, or what for the 1TB Blue?

Really it just depends on your needs. If you're like me, then 1Tb would never be enough. Where as if the laptop is for just email, web, file use, then you will probably find that the 320Gb drive will be more than you will ever need. the other thing is the price, expect around $300 or so.

Something you may what to check out before diving in is the 1Tb drive is a 12.5mm form factor drive, as it has 3 platters, not the industry standard 9.5mm height. be warned, it won't fit a lot of laptops.

I hadn't thought about the size factor yet. Apart from that I am trying to figure out which is more important: the extra speed of 320 GB @ 7200 RPM, vs the extra space of 1TB at only 5400 RPM.
I'll make my own decision once I get a feel of who thinks which is more important, provided it isn't too thick.
