Better broadband access?

The Australian Communications Authority (ACA) has registered an industry code, designed to give consumers better access to broadband services through local phone lines.
The updated unconditioned local loop service (ULLS) code outlines performance requirements and deployment rules that network operators have to follow when they're operating systems on the ULLS.
Dr Bob Horton, acting chairman at the ACA, believes that consumers will benefit by increased access to DSL-based services, and greater confidence in the integrity of existing systems being maintained.
"This code will help make it easier to deliver DSL-based broadband services to certain consumers who are not close to their exchange in the customer access network," said Horton.
Because it has now been registered the code is enforceable, according to a statement issued by the ACA. The organisation said the use of DSL technologies on ULLS allowed people to browse online faster than was possible with dial-up connections. The code was developed by the Australian Communications Industry Forum and replaces a previous code.
