iPhone gets turn-by-turn driving instructions in Australia - finally!

by Daniel Long  on Jun 22, 2009
Map provider Whereis has teamed up with app maker Sygic to unveil Australia's first turn by turn map guidance app for the iPhone; more than a few years after similar programs were unveiled on competing Nokia smartphones.

It's a special day for iPhone users. As of this week, iPhone users will no longer have to carry a seperate GPS device for driving. Sygic mobile are offering a $79.95 map application as a viable turn by turn car GPS alternative.

By partnering with map provider Whereis, Sygic have demonstrated to the market that they're serious about launching with a credible map supplier.

Whereis maps are already associated with a number of top consumer selling GPS devices, including Garmin and TomTom.

The annocement means that Sygic is now the first software app maker in Australia to offer turn-by-turn directions for the iPhone - and it can't come soon enough.

It's been a long wait for iPhone users. Most have been waiting since day one of the device's release to get turn by turn map access. However, Smartphones such as the Nokia and LG mobiles have been doing this for the last couple of years already.

The game of catch-up has never felt so obvious than the arrival of turn-by-turn mapping.  The new iPhone 3GS will feature a compass, a problem earlier iPhone models suffered from. This feature promises to make turn by turn instructions all the more viable.

The Sygic mobile app offers features you'd expect from a typical GPS car unit; including instant re-routing, lane guidance, speed zones and the usual school zones and safety alerts.

The software is available for download now from the Apple App store.
