After taking a sizeable pop at Windows 7, Apple's Phil Schiller has announced the main features of Snow Leopard
Wow. Phil Schiller is a man who doesn’t hang about. Having already announced a whole new raft of updates to the MacBook family, the Senior VP of Apple has already launched into the new feature set for Apple’s new OS, Snow Leopard.
After taking a sizeable pop at Windows 7, Schiller announced the main features of Snow Leopard:
• Faster with a smaller footprint – it's 45% faster to install and it's claimed that over half the footprint (6GB) is recovered, the Mail client is also 2.3x faster and web browsing is similarly speedy
• Built-in Exposé – Exposé is now built in to the dock – just click and hold on an app icon and you’ll be able to zoom to see all the windows of that app
• Safari 4 – shipping for Leopard, Tiger and, er, Windows, with new features including Crash Resistance. Like Google Chrome and IE8 it means that one tab error won’t bring down the whole browser. There’s also a slick Coverflow-style browsing history and full Spotlight search
• Speedy Safari – a claimed 7.8x faster than IE
• New-look Quicktime 10 – with accelerated hardware, HTTP streaming, as well as a neat visual timeline for quick and easy editing and exporting
• Exchange Support – hopping into bed with Microsft, Apple is offering Exchange support for Mail, Calendar, and Address Book, as well as easy syncing to business servers, making the Mac a more viable business option
• Handwriting recognition – for the trackpad.A neat little afterthought
The OS will be available as an upgrade in September. For anyone purchasing a new Mac between June 2009 and December 26 are eligible for the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Up-To-Date upgrade package, for a shipping and handling fee of $14.95.
