We've just been testing Solid State Drives (SSD) in our labs over the past few weeks, and the largest we were able to find for testing was 128GB. So were we both surprised and impressed to hear that Toshiba has announced the Portégé R600 laptop with 512GB SSD (solid state drive).
You'll shell out an eye-watering $4999 for the supersized SSD model, which will be available in Australia from June, but given that there are no moving parts the price might almost be worth it.
Accidents do happen, but an SSD laptop minimises the risk of data loss from bumps, knocks and vibrations.
We were already pretty fond of the excellent Portégé R600; 512GB of storage sounds much more appealing than the 200GB our prevfious model came with. In fact, it gives the Portégé R600 the world's largest SSD capacity.
Toshiba also claims that power consumption is cut by approximately 50%, thanks to a low voltage CPU, the SSD and a specially designed transreflective LCD that will hopefully be an improvement on the previous generation's disappointing offering.
Toshiba estimates 8hours of battery life, as a result of the changes, and the weight of the new model will be less than the previous generation too: just 1.1kg, compared to 1.4kg. Considering we already though the R600 was near perfect for business, we can't wait to get our hands on the new version.
