T-Mobile to launch second Android phone this summer

by Stuff.tv  on Apr 29, 2009
As T-Mobile confirms the Cupcake 1.5 update for May, it also dates its second Android-based phone for this summer.
T-Mobile has teased Android fans today, with news that it will be launching its second Android-based device this summer.

It's so far given no hints as to what handset this will be, but considering Samsung's first Android handset which went official yesterday, the announcement does seem to have been timed pretty conveniently.

While that remains to be seen, the news came piggybacking on an announcement that the mobile operator's first Android phone, the G1, is set to receive a whole host of new features in May thanks to the Cupcake 1.5 update.

This major update will see a touch-screen keyboard and video recording and playback being added to the phone's arsenal, alongside new widgets, zoom functions, and improvements to the email client and web browser. G1 owners will receive the update automatically over the air when it goes live.

T-Mobile reckons it's sold 100,000 G1 phones since its launch six months ago, which although a milestone, does pale in comparison to the like of the iPhone and even Nokia's 5800 Tube, which sold half a million handsets in its first 30 days.

We'll keep you updated on all the news, but while we're waiting to hear more from the T-Mobile camp, check out our hands-on video with the next Android to hit the shelves, the HTC Magic.
