Dirty deeds done dirt cheap? Software giant Microsoft is going to have starter version of Windows which it will sell on low-spec PCs and laptops jolly cheap.

Although the Vole has not said what it considers jolly cheap, the biggest downside is that the OS will be crippled so that it can only run three applications at the same time.

The big idea is that the Vole will help keep the price of the hardware down, but will force users who want to use it to pay for an upgrade for more usable to software.

To be fair, it would not make much sense to run more than three applications at the same time on a netbook, but it depends how the OS will count the three applications.

If you have a virus chucker that will be one gone, a word processor, that would be another. Add email and you have your three already. Some of these could boot up automatically anyway.

aimed for netbooks -seriously can't see a desktop or a normal lappy getting away with just 3 programs running... image if you have a virus scanner and a firewall (Third party) there's two applications running already

Some may see these editions as hobbled but in some cases I do feel they are warranted although others, it's plain crap.
Having a cut-down edition is a very nice for those with lite systems or those who want extreme gamers without wasted poop. I can vouch that going between Vista Basic and Vista ultimate (both x64 with 8GB of RAM), 15% faster loads and 12% less RAM footprint (not a real issue for me, LOL). Sure the eye candy is lacking a little but who cares when speed is wanted.

Things that do get me rilled up is when you see system sold by vendors running versions they shouldn't when they are running tiny CPU's and small RAM.
The other issue is that even the lite versions of the OS usually still contain all the extra crap, just locked away and un-enabled until you "UpGrade".

This is where, true LITE versions are the ticket but then you need to be good in cutting them down or getting a good cut-down version off a P2P site that most times pack a bunch of hidden gems called viruses. Before I get flogged for condoning piracy, read again as I have not mention pirated material. A person pays for a license sticker, not the media. You can legally obtain you OS anywhere so long as you have a valid license.
