EA founder reckons the biggest players in the handheld market, Sony and Nintendo, are in a panic over gaming on Apple's blower
Nintendo might be sounding bullish about its new DSi's chances. And Sony has clearly got plans for a rather sleek looking PSP 2. But according to the founder of EA, both major players are "freaked out" by the competition offered by the iPhone and iPod touch.
Offering up his tuppence worth to VentureBeat, Trip Hawkins, who now works for mobile types Digital Chocolate, said, "It's by far our most effective platform. We make as much money with these games on one device as we do putting a game on 100 different cell phone platforms."
Of course, working for a mobile gaming company means he's bound to big up Apple's chances. But he does reckon that Apple hasn't got even close to fulfilling its potential with its games offering, with stacks more to come.
His musings are backed up by recent stats from Apple which show its top 20 app downloads include a raft of games including Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D and Super Monkey Ball.
It's obvious that even the biggest players in gaming reckon the iPhone and iPod touch is game changer. But whether Nintendo and Sony are really panicked remains to be seen. If the DSi does well and that new PSP starts selling, expect them to look a lot more relaxed.
