Windows XP support runs out next week

Windows XP will pass another milestone on the road to retirement next week when Microsoft withdraws mainstream support for the operating system..

While the company said that it will continue to provide free security fixes for XP until 2014, any future bugs found in the platform will not be fixed unless customers pay for additional support.

Mainstream support for XP will end on 14 April 2009, over seven years after the operating system originally shipped.

However, the passing of the deadline will place Microsoft in the unusual position of no longer offering mainstream support for its most widely used product. Windows XP accounts for about 63 per cent of all internet connected computers, according to March 2009 statistics from Hitslink, while Windows Vista makes up about 24 per cent.

Windows XP also continues to be sold with low-cost mini laptops, otherwise known as netbooks, as Vista is too heavy on system resources for this level of hardware.

The key message, according to Microsoft, is that the company will continue to provide security support for XP users.

"We will provide critical security fixes via Windows Update for all editions of XP until 2014," said Laurence Painell, Windows marketing manager at Microsoft UK.

Microsoft's mainstream support includes problem resolution over the phone, and covers fixes for security and non-security related issues such as bugs and requests for changes.

Once Windows XP moves out of the mainstream support phase, customers will need an extended support contract with Microsoft or one of its channel partners to address any issues not related to security.

With a platform as mature as XP, this is unlikely to prove an issue, according to Microsoft.

"XP has been out a long time, so we would hope that there are not many issues that would require that level of support," said Painell.

Gartner analyst Michael Silver agreed, adding that he had not spoken to any companies planning to pay for extended support.

"The only thing extended support buys you is creation of new non-security fixes, at a hefty fee for each one. After all these years, most people figure that most of the functional bugs [in XP] are already worked out," he said.

In the past, most customers would already have moved to a newer platform before this deadline arrived. But because there was such a long gap between XP and Vista, customers have had only a couple of years to make the transition.

Many customers have also chosen to skip Vista and go straight to Windows 7, once this becomes available. Microsoft said that companies now have an opportunity to look at their options for a transition away from XP.

"Windows 7 is built on the same core architecture as Vista, and we provide a number of tools and applications to help companies understand any problems they might face," said Painell. He reiterated that customers can use Vista or the Windows 7 beta as test platforms for planning a migration to the forthcoming platform.

Meanwhile, Microsoft revealed that, while Windows 7 users will be able to downgrade to Windows XP, the reverse will not be true.

Microsoft said in its Engineering Windows 7 blog that XP users will have to perform a full install.

"There are simply too many changes in how PCs have been configured (applets, hardware support, driver model etc) that having all of that support carry forth to Windows 7 would not be nearly as high quality as a clean install," the blog entry said.

Windows 7 isn't even finished yet and is not proven to be better than XP. XP took years to reach its full, respected maturity.

Doesnt matter how you look at tests and claims, XP is old now and doesnt really compete in the scheme of things. Vista does work better than XP, just learn how to use it and that doesnt mean load it with a shit load of junk. A clean load of Vista with a few simple tweaks eats XP in load times, performance and all the extra features like DX10 and Media Center standard soon make for a better deal. Dont even bother with the business argument, business has been reluctant to move forward due to a combination of being scared due to negitivity from the general population (who many dont even have a bloody clue) and the current batch of IT people who dont know how to move with technology and new software. Vista Basic is actually a very powerfull edition for use in business and strips the arse out of XP while still being able to do all that is needed.
It's kind of like the old addage, can't have the "Home Edition", need to have the "Pro Edition" because it's faster or better.... Bullshit.

Windows 7, Yes, it has been proven to rip both Vista and XP a new ring. Look around or better still, use it for yourself. The ony hobble it has is beta drivers that cause a few hiccups that are only minor. It's very fast and packed with many features that people normally have to go waste money on with third-party crap.

To each, their own.

Hi All

It's interesting to note that XP "free" support is finally being withdrawn generally when there has just been an explosion of XP on Netbooks.
Now, for business it means that individual issues with XP, as it gets longer in the tooth, will be solved by throwing money at them and that is great for Microsoft.
So, where does it leave all the "new" crowd of Netbook owners when "issues" arrise, as they undoubtably will, down the track???
Will support become like Apple, a paid "update", because it sure as hell won't be a "new" XP.

Of course, Netbook owners will get the option to upgrade to Win 7, but it will cost.
Clever ploy this. Sell an outdated system already installed and then make that system instantly obsolete.
As the majority of Netbooks have no optical drive and most will not have external ones, that just leaves the Download a paid upgrade option. An option of little choice.

Boy, is Microsoft ever going to make a motza out of this.

Cheers

Well they can't support it forever. They have newer OSs to look after.

Besides, If XP has matured so much and is so great then MS shouldn't need to be patching and fixing it all the time. Issues that arrise should then fall on the vendors who keep making products that are not very well designed and developed. There are no standards anymore.

Hi All,

I have to agree with Cyb3rGlitch & Lost Benji there - They can't support it forever - I see nothing wrong [Security Fixes will still continue to 2014] what more can you ask?

After all XP's Release birth date was : - 25 October 2001. And will still get security support updates till 2014. I mean WOW think about how many years support this OS will get? Almost 13yrs.

I can't say that I know of any other OS that will be supported for that long to date!
Can you?

And yes – in that above time frame, pretty much – most! issues have been ironed out, or have some kind of support forum info available on all XP related topics/issues we've had to date.

So there shouldn't be any additional issues crop up if Netbook builders & the like - stick to the hardware guidelines and devices supported currently by XP.

XP is a well loved Dinosaur finally given permission to be ‘put to rest’.
Let a brilliant new junior OS; allow her to rest - I say ;)

Note: I too have never had any problems with Vista [so many Vista haters!] - only as a systems builder in the first 6 months – did it give me a bit of a headache - due to driver support.

Though this happens with every new OS put on the market - All OS's struggle in infancy for drivers support.

The main crime of Vista – Is she does require a lot more grunt under the hood, most of us where aware of this from day dot – So System manufacture’s shouldn’t have allowed low spec systems/laptops – to leave to door so to speak with under 1gig of ram. This is where the hate started; because the low spec cheap systems where hindered – with lags and speed/crashes.

Happy Easter All ;)
