Canon launches HD-shooting EOS 500D DSLR

The snappy new mid-range Canon EOS 500D DSLR packs 1080p and 15.1MP

Canon has unveiled a brand new mid-range DSLR camera packing hi-def video capabilities. The EOS 500D's CMOS sensor is able to capture both 15.1-megapixel stills and 1080p HD video.

An HDMI output allows users to hook the camera directly to a TV for instant playback of photos and videos. Also on board is the same screen used on the EOS 5D Mark II, which offers a Live View mode usable both for stills and video shooting. There's 3.4fps continuous shooting and an ISO range that goes all the way up to 12,800.

In many ways the 500D can be seen as the little brother of the 5D Mark II, but with an APS-C sensor instead of a full frame sensor. Pricing is yet to be announced in Australia, but of course we expect the price to be a little more amateur-friendly too.

Pricing is yet to be announced, but the 500D sits between the EOS 450D (can be had for around the $1,000 mark) and the 40D (can be found for around the $1,500 to $2,000 mark).
