Billion brings out fibre modem, we admire their wishful thinking

by William Maher  on Mar 17, 2009
Full credit to Billion for thinking big with their 100Mbps fibre-capable BiPAC 7800N modem. Bad luck to everyone who can't get 100Mbps.

Who needs the National Broadband Network when you've got 100Mbps to your door? Oh, you missed out too?

Some people can get 100Mbps, and all power to them, but in many cases they're living in swanky townhouses in new estates like Queensland's Fernbrooke, where the grass is perfect, "the air seems clearer and the sky so much bigger" (their words, not ours).

And for those lucky enough to live in a newly minted estate, Billion's BiPAC 7800N gives you the choice of ADSL2+ or "blindingly fast" fibre-to-the-home. The all in one modem also has 802.11n wireless networking.

Mind you, as we pointed out recently, 100Mbps isn't all it could be cracked up to be if you don't get the download quotas to go with it.

Here are the specs, as supplied by Billion:

  • Dual-WAN approach - ADSL2+ or Ethernet WAN for broadband connectivity
  • High-speed Internet Access via ADSL2/2+; backwards compatible with ADSL
  • Four-port Gigabit Switch
  • Wireless speeds up to 300Mbps and three times the coverage of standard 802.11b/g
  • Supports draft 802.11n Wireless Access Point with WPA-PSK / WPA2-PSK
  • WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) for easy setup
  • Quality of Service control for traffic prioritisation and bandwidth management
  • SOHO firewall security with DoS (Denial of Service) prevention and packet filtering
  • Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) compliance
  • Dynamic Domain Name System (DDNS)
  • Ease of use with Quick Installation Wizard and Auto-scan ADSL settings
  • Supports IPTV applications and Easy Sign-On (EZSO)
