Mininova: We're 100% legal, pay tax and generate millions in revenue

by Daniel Long  on Mar 17, 2009
Is file sharing a great way to make money? The founders of file-sharing site Mininova claim to have a tax-paying, revenue-making business model which just happens to be the world's largest BitTorrent search portal.

Some may be be left scratching their heads after reading this recent Torrentfreak interview with the founders of Mininova, who are operating amidst a sea of lawsuits and legal action, in particular the Pirate Bay court actions.

Those in charge at Mininova claim to be anything but dubious. In fact, they're more than willing to show the world that they're a legal, tax paying business entity, and proud of it.

The Netherlands based site is the top page ranking BitTorrent site in the world. Founders Erik Dubbelboer and Niek van der Maas told TorrentFreak they have used this surging web traffic to attract big, legitimate advertisers including Yahoo.

The Mininova team also told TorrentFreak they maintain a takedown system for material that breaches copyright, though when we checked, the site included such items as U2's album No Line on the Horizon.  Type the name Axxo into the search bar and over 500 top shelf DVD quality Hollywood titles will appear.

Based on those results - either the MPAA / RIAA aren't that serious about the infringements or the copyright takedown requests aren't being taken too seriously.  Even so, the Dutch copyright lobby arm BREIN are apparantly due to meet Mininova in court.
