Facebook unveils "streams"

Facebook unveils "streams"

A new 'stream' function arriving on Facebook next Wednesday will give users access to real-time comments from friends in much the same way Twitter operates.

Welcome to another set of Facebook changes. Although not quite as drastic as the renovations we saw in last year's overhaul, there are some interesting tweaks, not least the new "stream" feature.

Streams pick up real-time comments from your friends as they're being sent, which as you might be thinking, sounds like Facebook's version of Twitter (and also interesting recent reports of a Twitter buyout attempt by Facebook).

The additional use of a stream filter will also allow users to select what friends to get updates from and when.  Goodbye my boring old chums - hello new and more interesting people!

The facelift, due to kick in on March 11, is also expected to lift the ban on the amount of friends each user can have. The old 5000 friend rule will be abolished, so in effect, users can now be friends with just about everybody.

That might not please those who prefer the tighter number rule, unless you're Tom from MySpace, who currently has 258,583,717  friends.
