Is Cubism the answer for the smartphone UI?

It's nice to see LG trying something, anything, to stand out from the crowd with its Arena KM900, even if it is a 3D rotating cube menu.

LG's newly announced Arena KM-900 is bringing spinning 3D cubes back into vogue as a menu style.

Is it a good thing? The jury is out. Granted, anything that lets you avoid digging through fiddly menu items with a stylus is a good thing. But we've seen spinning cubes before on HTC devices, and we remain unconvinced.

But judge for yourself. The phone has been announced overseas, and is confirmed for Australia (details coming in March). Meantime, feast your eyes on some pictures here.

LG isn't holding back on the hype, with its press release saying: "The direct, intuitive and dynamic S-Class UI will be unlike anything that has appeared on a mobile phone before."

Maybe, though we have seen:

  • Google Android: Google phones like the HTC Dream have an extended home screen
  • iPhone: multi-touch and finger-friendly onscreen icons
  • Sony Ericsson Xperia X1: customise your favourite apps and links over several "panels" or homepages
  • HTC TouchFlo: HTC's custom interface adds finger-friendly nav bars and menus to Windows Mobile phones like the HTC Touch 3G and Touch Pro.
