Dell XT2: Should your next business laptop be a tablet?

by William Maher  on Feb 11, 2009
We can think of one reason a tablet is enticing - the 11 hours battery life on Dell's new multi-touch Latitude XT2 Tablet

Say tablets, and "aren't they for sales reps or something?"is usually the cry I hear. But we beg you to reconsider.

Say what you will about the rotating screens and sometimes chunky designs, but notebook vendors are definitely not giving up on the tablet (especially given that post-Windows XP, handwriting recognition is vastly improved).

Today's Latitude XT2 announcement from Dell gives us another reason to love the tablet - 11 hours battery life. That's 11 hours with "six cell battery and optional 6-cell battery slice", but still, this is better than you're going to get on many netbooks.

Dell's Latitude XT2: it's expensive, but a small price to pay for office bragging rights, right?

The XT2 is an inch thick, and boasts an LED screen and multi-touch, so you can pin zoom in and out, and pan and scroll using two fingers. It's a 12.1in screen, which is an excellent screen size for a portable in our opinion. The unit weighs up to 1.72Kg with the 6 cell battery.

Mind you, to achieve that 11 hour figure, Dell has taken some extreme power saving measure, including a Core 2 Duo ULV at up to 1.4Ghz. Until we get our hands on this for a review, we recommend trying before you buy.

Then there's the sticker price - sitting down? You're looking at $4,534 as a starting price. We still love the tablet, but just a little bit less.
