Asia Pacific Vice President Dan Neary calls the new and improved Skype 4.0 release a "revolutionary" software change; the biggest set of developments for the software code, since initial beginnings in Estonia in the early 2000s.
Skype 4.0's newest features in a nutshell:

A more efficient Skype
In the five years since the inception of Skype, hundreds of millions of users have joined Skype; but not everybody has been 100% pleased with the growth of Skype, particularly since they were sold to eBay.
More to the point, Skype is often dependent on the speed of the broadband connection and the power behind the computer hardware. The better the broadband, the more reliable the Skype connection.
I don't know how many times I've used Skype-Out (Skype calling phones) around the globe, only to get the dreaded 'echo' effect. Other classic Skype problems include random drop-outs and static.
Problems solved
The new Skype 4.0 aims to remedy these common technical faults, with an improved audio codec that uses 50% less system resources. The software also boasts a complete redesign; these are not just cosmetic changes but definite improvements in the way we use Skype.
For instance, video calls are easier to make (streamlined intuitive interface), the sound quality has been perfected for clearer calls and conversations can now be cleverly mounted in one area, including all calls and IMs in one easy box, without the need to open multiple windows. New conversation lists offer more flexibility with a larger window for easier to organise conversations.
