Ubuntu tries marketing slogan, fails

Hey, we like Linux, which is why we're a tad concerned by Ubuntu's efforts to come up with a hip training slogan.

It seems the Linux distro most likely to get installed by your grandmother is upping the stakes in the marketing department - into cringe territory.

Triggering some un-complimentary feedback right now is this page on the US Ubuntu Store training page (see image below).

Take a second look at the slogan. We're committed as the next guy to learning Linux, but we're not sure "Learn as if you were to live forever" is the inspiration we need.

On the other hand, full credit to the people behind Ubuntu for trying a level of hipness not seen since Microsoft hired Tom Skerritt (the M*A*S*H guy) to get all excited about Vista.

Every one has to "learn" to use a computer operating system and they are all pretty much the same except for their individual quirks.
By emphasising the "learn" aspect in relation to Ubuntu Linux it is implying that there is a degree of difficulty with Ubuntu Linux that is in fact not there.
Microsoft doesn't make an issue of it, neither does Apple and both of their systems have to be "learned" at some point.
Ubuntu does itself and the Linux operating system a disservice in the way it has approached it's marketing by singling itself out as "different" when in fact it is just another operating system not that different to the rest and NO more difficult to master.

ahh, did anyone notice that this slogan was in direct reference to "official ubuntutraining courses", not the OS itself.
therefore, a slogan like this is quite befitting, albeit a little bit tardy.
i'm sure, too, that if you do a quick google search you will be able to find courses for xp, vista and osx. minus the crappy slogan of course.

"Hey, we like Linux, which is why we're a tad concerned by Ubuntu's..." - a statement on a .aspx page, which means it runs on top of windows.
While this could be true, I'm skeptical when people choose using windows servers over Linux and say they love Linux, then they slam Linux (Ubuntu in this case) and say again that they love it, doesn't make sense to me, unless it's the good old tactics.

If you connect via WLAN or ethernet, it's automatic.

Unless you're trying to use bridged mode, in which case you need to set it up somewhere in the OS with the PPP auth information ;)

Well done Ubuntu! Pitty about the "gay" (there I said it!) campaign though. But keep up the good work.
