Intel attempts to spoil AMD's party with 32nm

After a relatively boring 12 months of Intel spanking AMD all over the park, the CPU is getting interesting again.
First off, the Phenom II - AMD's first 45nm generation, which, depending on your allegiances is either the second coming for AMD's desktop fortunes, or a last ditch effort to stave off a beating in the benchmark game by Intel's Core i7.

We've been sworn to secrecy (along with our friends at Atomic) while Phenom II benchmarks are run and the chip put through its paces. The official block on reviews is in place until January 9.

Second, Intel has announced its move to 32nm chips, which is a bit cheeky because the CPUs won't actually appear till late 2009. Still, it's a sign of the times when major CPU announcements like this happen within days of each other, and we get this excited.

If you want to see Intel's 32nm announcement it's here. Importantly, Intel says its 32nm achievement means this is the fourth year in a row it has met its "tick tock" goal. Whatever's in the drinking water, it's doing good stuff for their engineers.
