Windows 7 Build 6956 torrented

It mightn't be official, but Windows 7 is out there on torrent feeds.
It is rather unsurprising that China, that great bastion for “liberated software”, would generate this sort of event: an attendee at WinHEC China snuck away with the VHD image (Virtual PC 2004 Virtual Hard Drive) file of Windows 7’s 6956 build and promptly uploaded it to a torrent site.

As expected world+dog are on the case, having a go at it. Unfortunately, the VHD isn’t a bootable disk, but some users have fiddled enough with the virtual disk image and the 6801 build install to create a fully installable ISO.

Torrent chat is reporting users have overcome the non-boot disk issue by using the installer for the 6801 build, and the jury-rigged ISOs are replacing the original VHD on torrent sites as we speak.

We can’t imagine a better deal for Microsoft. You know... having someone leak the build and dozens of torrent sites picking up on it so thousands of new machines are populated with your latest OS.

We still don’t know what the fuss is about, though. Once you’ve overcome the ISO hurdle, jumped over the activation timer and ran through the WGA protection gate, you get Windows 7 Beta 1 out in two weeks time reinstall... quite frankly, why bother?

Apparently Chinese bragging rights are in order.

I am no more interested in Windows 7 than I was in Vista. Windows 7 will no doubt continue Microsoft's predatory pricing policies and let's just say I am severely underwhelmed! XP rules! It's quite as unfriendly as Vista is, but at least I've got it going, on three PCs and a laptop. I am not interested in getting into a mess with Vista and/or Windows 7 at the costs of many hundreds of dollars for new licences and (probably) software compatibility problems. No thanks. I can foresee XP staying on my computer(s) for quite some time to come. Amazingly, this situation is making me averse to buying either software or even new computers, so I have to wonder at the wisdom of this kind of marketing. I might have given Vista a go a long time ago, but as things are, I am not going to bother. Instead of me buying a new OS and/or a new computer, I am buying NOTHING and intend to keep it that way for the foreseeable future.

How can you judge something which isn't finished yet?

jaxcaer,

I am a recent Vista convert. Once you try it you will look back on XP with disdain. XP is truly showing its age, its not secure, it takes ages to reinstall.

Vista, once u turn off the annoying stuff, is a breeze. MUCH more secure, greater functionality. If your hardware is not too old then you would be unwise to stick with XP, unless theres some specific software of yours which doesnt work with Vista.
