Foxtel iQ2 no longer so infuriating, gets fix for 2009

"I have the Foxtel IQ2 with a 46" LCD and have not suffered from any of the mentioned issues everyone here seems to be having. Oh well lucky me! :p"

You told us and we listened. The good battle has been fought for our loyal readers and Foxtel is coming to the table next year with a new fix to address the common buffer problem that makes iQ2 users so mad.
By around March 2009, loyal iQ2 subscribers will no longer be at the mercy of commercial television running way over schedule or having to find an alternative way to view those crucial overtime sporting moments.

Patrick Delany, executive director for sales and product at FOXTEL, told us that Foxtel's iQ2 units are to receive a long and overdue fix in the first quarter of 2009, specifically 'program by program' recording and buffer extensions.

A 20 minute buffer will automatically be available as a new enhancement to the service, in addition to a more simple interface. Recording with the extended buffer will be operated straight from the guide without it being necessary for the user to change system settings or fiddle around with the remote.

Better still, Mr Delany has told us that the iQ2 device will operate “on a program to program basis”, which is a major overhaul for the service. We reported about this infuriating issue in this story .

TiVo is also ramping up with a selection of bonus content. Tivo also allows users to record on a program to program basis, but it's great to see that this much sought after feature will finally appear on iQ2 boxes.

And if you’re still using the old iQ1, the buffer controls on that device are also being closely looked at by Foxtel management. Mr Delaney has told us that if the program by program recording style is a success, then the iQ1 may be next in line for an update.

We like the sound of the new fix so much, that we'd ideally prefer to see the changes happen before the end of this year. Still, if this issue has proved anything – it's that the industry can and does take note when prompted to take action. Thanks to our loyal PC Authority readers for your input on this one.

Are they fixing the dodgy remotes ? So you don't have to place those ugly little stickers over the face of the IQ2 ? (Apparently caused by us who dare have LCD and Plasma tv's connected to the IQ2)

Is this update going to fix the rewind and fast forward preview speed so it does not look like HD video being streamed over dial-up internet ? You know... the whole 1 frame per 3 seconds or so that you get when at 12x or 30x speed ? Its about 10x WORSE than the older IQ1 boxes.

Are they having their contractor use quality ADSL2+ filters when connecting the phone lines so it does not knock out your internet connection when they connect their cheap rubbish 'tech somthing-or-other' no name brand ones ?

Are they fixing the problems with having to reboot the unit every other day ?

Being able to WATCH a show without the unit freezing, spontaneously rebooting, changing channels or shutting off when you try to turn up the volume is more desperately needed than a buffer fix !

I agree with kevin_watters completely. Our IQ box will frequenly spontaneously reboot, freeze or switch itself off and often just loses the "record a season" setting.

When we contacted tech support they sympathised but said the only thing we could do was re-initialize the entire box "which may sort out the problem - of course you will lose everything you have recorded and all your recording preferences". After working in IT for over 30 years I have come to expect something more than "have you tried turning it off and on again".

If there was anything better I would throw it out of the window.

I have to be honest - I don't agree with the top two comment posters. I have had a very good experience with the Foxtel IQ service. I think it's very reliable and works better than any PVR I've owned. It's simple to use and even my parents can work it out - which is a small miracle in itself.

I think every electronic device can experience problems for a small segment of the population - even the best ones; even those cherished Apple Products that win half the PCA R&S awards - even they can break down.

I've never once experienced the problems that you guys are speaking of, but I think it's good to let Foxtel know your problems, because it lets the tech media be aware of the situation.

I wish I did not have the problems I am having... at thats after having the IQ2 replaced twice ! My original IQ was replaced several times (3+). The original IQ unit we had was hardwired (non-satellite)... the current system we have is satellite. The IQ box behaves exactly like the original IQ unit... it requires nearly a daily reboot to fix problems with the program schedule preview etc. The IQ2 unit is on satellite (we never had a hard wired version) and when compared to the original IQ is UTTER RUBBISH in terms of reliability and quality. The second replacement unit had to have a little sticker stuck over the face to stop random power-offs, reboots, channel changes etc... but has not resolved the problems completely. On every single FBO movie we purchase (2 free per month on our plan) the movie stutters, causes the unit to reboot or has some other issue so we don't even bother to try using it really. Foxtel's solution: remote reboot or reset. As I mentioned... the video playback on anything above 2x is 1/4 the speed or less compared to the original IQ and is basically USELESS. If anybody want to come to my place and see exactly what I am talking about let me know... I will be more than happy to show you. And as prosmart states... if there was another option I would tell them to shove this thing... but I am stuck in their bloody 2 year contract.

I have seen/used TIVO in USA and Canada and it is decades ahead of what we have here. For one thing... they don't use smart cards so TIVO connects to the cable line and thats it... 150+channels to record from. And you can have 50 TIVOs in your house with no extra cost. THATS why Foxtel wont have a lick of it.

sorry... small correction: the TIVO in the US requires a cablecard decoder
